Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta)
The Ptarmigan or Rock Ptarmigan breeds and lives in Arctic or sub Arctic regions of North America, Europe and Asia. In the UK the Ptarmigan is only found in Scotland’s highest sub Arctic mountains.
The home of the Ptarmigan in Scotland is usually over 2000ft and the birds seldom move far from their breeding ground.
In the summer months the Ptarmigan is a superbly camouflaged bird with mottled brown, black and grey plumage. In the winter when the snow begins to fall the plumage turns pure white.
