There is a great diversity and variety of African birds. This is largely because of the biodiversity and vastness of Africa. The continent is for example home to more than 2300 species of birds. While many are endemic to Africa.
Some Favourites
Some of our favourite Birds from Africa
Flamingo – Best known African Bird
There are 6 species of Flamingo worldwide. Africa is however home to just two. The first being the Lesser Flamingo. This is perhaps the best know in Africa. Chiefly because of the once huge colonies of Lake Nakuru. Secondly there is the Greater Flamingo.
The Greater Flamingo is the larger of the two African species. This is also the most widespread. Because it extends from Africa, India and into parts of Europe.
We have watched and photographed Lesser Flamingos at Nakuru, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro crater.
Superb Starling – The brightest African Bird?
Our UK native starling is a fairly drab bird. Occasionally, the mature bird reveals its sparkling greens and purples in the summer sun. In contrast some of the African Starlings are exceptionally bright. So much so they must be seen to be believed. The Superb Starling being one of the brightest.
Pied Kingfisher – An adaptable African Bird
African Kingfishers are amongst the brightest of their birds. From the smallest’s Pigmy and Malachite to the much larger Giant Kingfisher. One of the most interesting and photogenic however not amongst the most colourful. I reffer here to the Pied Kingfisher.
The Pied Kingfisher is a medium sized Kingfisher. Despite the plain black and white colouration. A bird with very distinct markings.
The pied Kingfisher is a very adaptable bird. As a result it is a very widespread African bird. Also it can be seen in a range of environments. Including residential areas and hotels.
A further fascination with the Pied is the ability to hover. We have watched this bird in many areas throughout Africa. Always fascinates and can turn up any where. Often when least excepted.
